Integrated Submission Grappling

INTEGRATED SUBMISSION GRAPPLING

Integrated Submission Grappling is a hybrid grappling system that is based in Catch-As-Catch-Can Wrestling. Catch Wrestling was developed in Britain in 1870 and it is thought to have come to America with Irish immigrants, and gained popularity in the states through carnival strong men issuing standing challenges to all comers to try and defeat them. Two of the main tenets of Catch Wrestling are pain and pressure. Catch wrestling teaches its practitioners how to create pain by applying pressure to their opponent. While Jiu Jitsu focuses on finessing the submission, Catch teaches how to use force to bring about openings to attain the submission.

Catch Wrestling rules allow for victory by way of pinning both shoulders or by submission. The ability to win by pinning actually makes your grappling better because it forces you to constantly work and to never be comfortable on your back.

The other grappling systems that ISG draws from are Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Sambo, Judo and Shoot Wrestling. Each of these arts offers their own unique approach to fighting and when “integrated” together they form a very effective and efficient submission grappling system.

Wrestling

Wrestling is a combat sport that uses grappling techniques including clinch fighting, throws and takedowns, joint locks, pins and other grappling holds. The skills you learn in wrestling: pressure, explosive force, and control can be utilized in self-defense and helps develop the instinct to defend yourself.

Wrestling is a killer workout that targets the entire body. Not only is it  physically demanding, but the skills learned in wrestling help build a basic foundation that will allow the user to excel in other martial arts. Strength is developed from the constant pushing and pulling and maintaining a good stance. Flexibility and good core strength are both used to defend against takedown attempts. Maintaining balance while exerting explosive strength is needed to secure a takedown.
